Araby

Araby allows us to relive what is potentially one of the worst times for a lot of people's lives. The motions that the protagonist goes through bring back  a pained nostalgia of the jumbled, indecipherable emotions that we can go through at the time. The worst of it, as the protagonist demonstrates is often the inability to articulate these unwanted emotions to other people. This aspect just stacks irony on the whole situation as the woman he's upset with is not even consciously aware of his secret obsession. He almost comically embodies the ideation of Shakespeare's Romeo. Just extremely unsuccessful without anywhere near the same level of confidence. All in all, watching the protagonist slowly realize his own faults is at least relatable to some degree. The rumination style the character demonstrates is actually in line with the way many depressed individuals think. He may not know it, but by this reasoning his teenage years would only get worse after the story takes place. This same explanatory style is reminiscent of the monologues given throughout Shakespeare's Hamlet by the prince of Denmark himself.
